The artist
I work in a variety of mediums and techniques to express my awareness of the world as it is for me, an unpredictable world of pattern, promise, foreboding, peace and tension, beauty and rawness.
My work is personal, I look for intensity and beauty within the ordinary - when I work on a landscape I try to feel a mood, try to touch my remembered experience of the place. For me, experience is at it’s most powerful when sensual and I try to create a connection between the senses as I work.
When I’m working it can be painful, calming, frustrating or exciting but, when it’s going well, above all else there‘s a fluidity to it and it’s that flow I look forward to meeting again with a new piece. I’m often surprised by what emerges while I work and that, for me, is what makes a piece complete - a feeling of the picture or ceramic taking control of the process.
